40 Hour Famine Sleepover

On Friday the 9th of June, 7pm, the Rimu classroom was invaded with 4 girls. These girls had a mission, the mission was to have as much fun as possible whilst raising money for World Vision. 

The annual 40 Hour Famine had kicked off. 

Hut building, spotlight, popcorn, truth or dare, dress ups, movie watching and waiting for the school alarm to go off and attempting to get some sleep are just a few of that activities that the night involved.

Each student had to choose a challenge to participate in. Surprisingly Prudence was incredible quiet but it seemed that her challenge was no speaking, which she completed. Lucy, Hannah and Bella were doing the 'Bag Challenge'. This is when you live out of a bag. All succeeded in doing this, though I'm not convinced refugees have that many bags of popcorn with them. 

The reason these wonderful students were completing these challenges is to raise money for Syrian refugees. This is the second year World Vision is using the 40 Hour Famine to raise money for this cause and that is because the crisis isn't over. 

We do have a few students who are completing this challenge at home over the weekend. We are hoping to raise $1500 but anything that we raise does count, so even if we don't hit the target that's ok. 

Our Generation United to make a change!

Today we had a special visitor to our class. 

Alex from World Vision came to tell us all about the 40 Hour Famine for 2017.

This year the 40 Hour Famine is supporting Syrian Refugees. This is the same as last year. Usually they try and support a different cause each year but because it is still a major problem in the world they want to continue to make a change.

Some facts about Syria:

•  It has been going on for 7 years (that's longer than our junior classes have been alive!)
• Many people who are just like us have had to move away from their homes to live in refugee camps.
• The money raised will help support children in these refugee camps.

Last year the Year 6-8 Rimu class raised over $1000 dollars. With more students this year we are hoping to raise even more. We are pretty excited about this. And with our books we received a world vision bracelet. We are wearing them with pride!

So we have 5 weeks to get ready. We hope you support us by sponsoring our awesome cause.

Our 40 Hour Famine Results!

Alex from World Vision came to visit yesterday which was exciting. She told us our final total we raised was $1006.50! This year the money is going towards helping the children of Syrian refugees get some education while in their refugee camps. It costs $100 to train a teacher...if we raised $1000 how many teachers will we train?

Some of us also put 10 hours of our 40 Hour Famine towards our Community Service for our William Pike Challenge Award. We are HEROes!
