Problem Solving

Every second Friday Rimu class works on a math problem. These math problems are based on the idea of low floor, high ceiling - problems that all can access and all can try different strategies to solve it. There are no wrong ideas, or wrong answers, just a good step into the learning pit.

This week we worked on a Jo Boaler problem called Toothpicks. We had to work out how many toothpicks were in a 3 x 3 shape, without counting. We then went away and worked on the problem of a 2x2, 4x4 & 13x13. How many strategies can we make for each shape? We were super lucky because we had Miss Adams in to help us.

  1. Hi my name is Dazharn from Waikowhai Primary School. The one thing that I liked was the photo's of how you are working together and helping each other to solve this problem. I remember a time when we had to solve a problem and the problem was how much is it to go to these places and we had to add it buy how much fuel we use and how long the trip was. The one thing you could change next time is have more writing and less pictures because it took to long to scroll down you could put the photos in a google slideshow or something so it would make it easier. could you check out my blog at http://wpsdazharnr.blogspot.com blog you later.

  4. Bula Rimu class,
My name is Faith. I am a student at Waikowhai Primary School. I love how you do problem solving every second Friday. It reminds me of when we do our family facts when we are with our teacher. Maybe next time you could add less photo's and talk more about how you solved it and what you used, if you would like to have a look at my blog here's the link https://wpsfaithc.blogspot.com/
